One of the most beloved artists in American history, the “King of Swing” was many things: a virtuoso clarinetist who broke ground in pop, jazz, and classical styles; a visionary bandleader whose efforts and innovations helped reshape the big band sound in the 1930s; a fighter for racial equality who integrated his bands decades before other public institutions integrated; and so much more.

Master musician and teacher Loren Schoenberg—a longtime associate and friend to Goodman—brings you into the life and world of this extraordinary figure.

If the 1950s were not the greatest decade in the history of Jazz, it’s hard to imagine what would be! This was an era in which every variety of Jazz–America’s greatest contribution to world musical culture–flourished. From pianists to singers to drummers, from Hot Jazz to Cool Jazz, the music commanded both critical respect and mass popularity like never before.

In this four-part retrospective, award-winning historian and journalist Will Friedwald takes a deep dive into the jazz world of 60 to 70 years ago with a combination of critical acumen, musical perception, and rare performance footage (from vintage films and TV shows) not found anywhere else!
